Snapjacks. I remember someone or more than one person being interested in men’s shoes from the 50s that were called Snapjacks. If you have $500, there’s two pair for sale on ebay…waiting for taps of course. http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-Mens-Snapjack-Shoes-TWO-PAIR-SIZE-8-5-9-/170661169559?pt=US_Mens_Vintage_Shoes&hash=item27bc32c997

Believe it or not, in the late 60’s/early 70’s girls and womens shoes suddenly went from the conservative styles of the 50’s and 60’s to a masculine look. Schoolgirls started wearing snapjacks with big heel taps and loafers with thick, heavy soles and heel taps! The loafers were personalized with bright brass initials of the owner attached to the tongue by the store as the time that the shoes were sold!

My neighbor across the street had a pair of the plain black snap jacks with #8’s on the heels. They were awesome. I was very young at the time, but they probably planted the seed of my interest in steel on the heel and the great sound.

We called them “monster shoes”…the boxy, ugly womens’ shoes of the early 70’s. Many did have steel taps on the heels, possibly to add to the “Herman Munster” effect. Previous styles of the 60’s had been sleek; soft, sexy, colorful loafers (Oldmaine Trotters) and feminine babydoll flats that made a young man snap to attention whenever a cute college girl came clicking by in taps. I didn’t know what to think of the monster shoes, except that I hated them!

Let’s not forget that the much loved double soled, 2″ heeled “campus boots” were born during the “monster shoe” era!!
